'Independents are vital key'

ENTREPRENEURS and independent businesses with a long term vision for Hull City Centre are crucial to creating a vibrant leisure and retail market in the area.
This is the view of Simon Grainger, surveyor at Garness Jones, who said investment by independent operators needs to be encouraged in order to revitalise the city centre, and help it realise its full potential.
Earlier in the year, local entrepreneur Alfie Goulbourne snapped up space in the Old Town to open Lick Bar, underlining his faith in the area's potential.
Mr. Grainger said empty properties in the city centre offered the perfect opportunity for other entrepreneurs looking to capitalise on up and coming parts of the city.
Speaking about current activity in the area, he said: "We have seen continuing demand in Hull city centre since the early part of the year and although the summer months are generally much quieter, we are finding that demand is still good.
"This is not only for restaurants but also for retail units as well. We have just agreed a letting on a retail unit on North Church Side which is adjacent to Holy Trinity Church to an independent fashion retailer."
He added: "Everyone involved in the city's future needs to ensure that we encourage independent operators."
