Mr Motorfix's career back on the road after setback

A FORMER caravan worker who lost his job as a result of the downturn has turned the devastating blow to his advantage.

Qualified engineer Paul Dry had long harboured a dream of setting up his own business.

However with a family to support and a well-paid job behind him, he always felt the risk was too high.

But after 20 years working in the caravan sector, in May Paul was made redundant.

Determined not to rely on benefits, the 46 year old, of west Hull was directed to Hull City Council's Business Support team.

And now he is preparing to open the doors to Paul Dry's Motorfix, a new car and motorhome service centre in Galliard Close, Hessle Road, which is set to open on September 1.

He said: "I didn't want the skills I'd developed in the caravan sector to go to waste and I'd always kept my hand in servicing cars, so my business will service cars and motorhomes.

"I used my redundancy package to set up the business and also received some funding from the Chamber of Commerce.

"Hull City Council were a great help and directed me to Business Link, who helped me tie up all the loose ends."

The unit's high ceilings means Paul can safely work on taller vehicles like motorhomes, making it the ideal.

"I'd been searching for ages for suitable premises and when I saw this it was perfect," he added.

Paul is now in the process of recruiting an addition qualified engineer and hopes to also give an apprentice a foot on the ladder.

Paul leased the unit with the assistance of surveyor Dale Gooderham, of Garness Jones.
