Garness Jones Reception

Prpperteis

A new pitch for Urban Campers

27/10/2010

MOST people consider their home to be their castle, but for many, their castle of choice comes on four wheels.

Whether it be a caravan, camper van or motorhome, the British population has long had a passion for parking-up and holidaying wherever their vehicle will allow.

But a growing number of people are now looking for increased comfort and a home on wheels that is as much suited to city centre commuting as it to parking up next to the seaside.

And these people are being helped to realise their dreams thanks to Urban Campers, a firm that builds high quality compact campers and motorhomes to suit customer’s needs, at realistic prices.

Founded in 1994 by brother Sean and Adam the company was initially an offshoot of their cabinet making business.

But demand has grown so rapidly that Urban Campers has parked up at a new home of its own, expanding into unit 1a in the Knedlington Industrial Estate, Howden.

Sean said: "We build one-off bespoke campers.”We specialise in converting Fiat Ducatos

and Doblos, Renault Kangoos and Toyota Hiaces.

"The market is changing; I think around 2003 a lot of people were making money through property and remortgaging their house, so they wanted bigger flashier camper vans.

"Now we are seeing a lot of customers who want to be able to drive to Scarborough or wherever and park up and have a cup of tea in their vehicles, then drive back again.

"They maybe only sleep in it occasionally but also want to be able to drive it around the supermarket car park and through the town centre, which isn't easy with a big campervan."

Converting a smaller vehicle into a dream machine on wheels also brings cost savings, as Sean explained.

"People want their campers to be fuel efficient while also being comfortable and practical to sleep in.

"The majority of our customers are retired; they are dog watchers or bird walkers, for example and they want comfort and practicality as well as style."

Urban Campers has been joined on the estate by another newcomer, Action Tyres - a mobile tyre fitting company run by Kevin Taylor, which has moved into unit 1e.

And motorcycle expert Dave Bancroft is now repairing motorcycles from unit 1d.

All the deals were overseen by Dale Gooderham at Garness Jones who said the units had proved very popular with expanding firms.

He said: "There are five units in this terrace that we are instructing on, and in the space of a month we have potentially let four of them."
