Garness Jones Reception

Homeware is where the heart is for mum

17/11/2010

IT HAS taken her nearly four decades, but Samantha Waud believes she has finally discovered a job she loves.

The 39-year-old mother-of-two is opening a new gift and home ware store in Well Lane, Beverley, called Tabatha’s Ltd.

She decided to open her own shop after working for a year in a giftware store in Hessle.

Mrs Waud, of West Ella, enjoyed her work at the shop so much she decided to take the plunge and set up on her own.

She said “I have always been one to chat to other people and it wasn’t like being at work, it’s more like a night out, just chattering to people.”

This is the first time in her life Mrs Waud has felt gripped by work.

She said: “I have never really found the right thing for me, I have had a lot of little jobs here and there. I used to help out in a pub and have done days at Beverley market with a friend who runs a clothes stall, but it’s never really grabbed me.”

Mrs Waud worked in retail for 14 years prior to having children.

She started out as a “Saturday girl” at Skeltons and worked her way up to manager of a number of their shops.

She left Skeltons to have her first son, who is now 14.

Two years later while preparing to return to the workplace she became pregnant with a second son, now 12.

Mrs Waud said: “I had plans to go back to work at Skeltons, but my mum died and that changed things.

“I just thought ‘Life is too short and I have got these babies and they won’t be babies for long so I have got to enjoy it while they are’ “.

Mrs Waud decided to become a stay-at-home mum, devoting herself to bringing up her two boys. But now she feels the time is right to throw herself back into the workplace.

She said:”Now the boys are a bit older I have got a bit more free time on my hands.

“My husband said ‘Why don’t you go for it?, so that was the start of it all.”

She found the premises in July but only finalised the plans last month.

The deal on the property was overseen by Sam Vinall, surveyor at Garness Jones.

Tabatha’s will be opened by the town crier at 11am on Saturday.
