Cleartech expands with new premises and staff

20/07/2011

Waste and recycling firm aims to become round the clock operation

A waste management company is expanding by moving to a new site.

Cleartech Waste Services has bought a unit at Sutton Fields Industrial Estate after outgrowing its facilities in Wincolmlee.

Cleartech will be moving out of its recycling centre in Rix Road in Stoneferry, East Hull, and its Wincolmlee based offices and has permission to use its new 2.1 acre site as a waste transfer recycling site.

The unit in Stockholm Road was formerly a metal foundry owned by UCB Starkeys, which has lain dormant since it closed 18 month ago.

Cleartech owner Steve Gibson, who runs the company with son Scott, plans to expand his 65 strong workforce by taking on about 20 new employees.

He said: "the move will allow the firm to take on more business and eventually operate on a 24 hour, seven days a week basis.

He said: “The company started off as a waste broker and eight years ago we began focusing on recycling.

Now we have outgrown our premises and we’re running to capacity. We’ve grown year on year.

We need a bigger place to take on more clients”

Building work is being carried out at the unit and it is expected to be in operation by next month.

The company, was founded in 1999 as a hazardous waste broker, performing full waste audits for clients and organising for their waste to be removed safely and efficiently from their sites.

As the client base grow, it allowed the company to invest in its own fleet of vehicles to and travel further a field to the north of England.

Cleartech opened its first material recycling facility in Rix Road in 2005 and the Gibsons took over the firm in 2008.

Since then the company has gone from strength to strength, with its fleet expanded to 17 vehicles and has contracts nationwide.

The securing of large contracts, such as the bioethanol plant at BP’s Chemicals site at Saltend in Hull has seen its annual turnover more than tripled.

Other key clients include Millennium Chemicals, Aunt Bessies, Jacksons, ICI and Smith & Nephew.

Mr Gibson said the Government’s hiking up of landfill tax charges has led to companies looking for more cost-effective ways to dispose of their waste.

He said: “Companies are looking for a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to landfill.

There are many products of value in waste that can produce a profit for companies or at least break even so that the service is free of charge.

We can go along to clients and complete an audit for free and offer training on how companies can improve efficiencies and reduce waste.

So many people recycle their waste at home but many companies still think nothing of chucking so much away that goes to landfill.
